3 So-Called Healthy Foods That Contribute to Weight Gain

Weight gain is a huge concern for many individuals today, especially for women. There are so many diets around, but yet it is difficult to maintain a healthy weight without starving yourself. This is mainly due to the fact that we have been led to believe that certain foods are good for us, and thus we fill up on those foods. But in reality these so-called healthy foods contribute to weight gain just like junk foods do.

Here is a short list of so-called healthy foods that contribute to weight-gain.

Meat

All meat is high in protein. But new studies have shown that a lot of these proteins can not be used by the body. Thus they become toxic in the body, and have to be neutralized before they can leave the body. If the body does not have enough antioxidants to neutralize these toxins the body simply stores them away in fat cells so that they cannot harm the body.

Dairy

The dairy industry is correct when they say that milk contains a lot of calcium. But did you know that milk also contains a lot of fatty acids which need to be neutralized by calcium? And the calcium that it uses comes from your bones. Thus in the end you could end up losing more calcium as a result of drinking milk than you can obtain from it.

In order for you to absorb calcium you need lots of vitamin D. According to studies the majority of Americans are deficient in this essential vitamin. This basically means that if you are deficient in vitamin D, you will not be able to absorb enough calcium for strong bones or, to help neutralize the acids.

And guess what happens to all the acids that do not get neutralized and eliminated from the body…they get wrapped up in fat cells which the body stores away from the organs, so that they cannot harm the body.

Eggs

Eggs are touted for being rich with all the essential omega fatty acids. But did you know that they are also very high in cholesterol which contributes to weight gain, poor circulation and heart disease.

The good news is that you can obtain all the essential nutrients, proteins, calcium and healthy oils from a raw plant-based diet. Lots of leaf vegetables will provide you with proteins as well as calcium. Nuts and seeds will also provide you with proteins as well as all the essential fatty acids.

How to Convert Unhealthy Dessert Recipes Into Healthy Ones

We all have favorites foods and recipes we tove to prepare, but hesitate because of all the fat and caloires! Maybe you have recipes passed down through the generations by family members that are delicious but use
shortening, cream and other unhealthy ingredients. You feel guilty just reading the recipe!

Wouldn’t it be great to be able to make over those unhealthy recipes and convert them into healthy ones?

Fortunately, there are lots of healthy subsitutions you can make to your recipes to make them healthy and guilt free:

1. Alter the amount of sugar in your recipes or use sugar substitutes.

You can quickly and easily make a restaurant lower in calories and carbs by reducing the amount of sugar in the recipe. You can decrease the amout of sugar by up to 1/3 in some cases without altering the taste. Another alternative is to replace the sugar in the recipe with a noncalorie sugar substitute such as Splenda. Usually, Splenda can be used in equal amounts to replace sugar. If you use a different sugar substitute, you may need to experiment a bit to determine the optimal quantity.

2. Replace some of the heart unhealthy fats with healthier ingredients.

Replace half the shortening, butters, and oils with heart friendly pureed applesauce or macerated banana. For example, if the recipe calls for 1/2 cup of cooking oil, use 1/4 cup canola oil and 1/4 cup pureed applesauce. The finished recipe should still taste moist but will be lower in calories and fat.

3. Replace whole milk with lower fat substitutes.

Where a recipe calls for whole milk, use skim milk or low fat soy milk in equal proportions.

4. Determine which ingredients are extraneous to your recipe and eliminate them.

For example, do you really need to add the icing to the cake you’re making or would it taste almost as good without it? If so, eliminate it along with the extra calories.

5. Consider cutting back on some of the high calorie ingredients when possible.

For example, if your chocolate chip recipe calls for 1/2 cup of pecans, go with 1/3 cup instead. This shouldn’t significantly affect the basic recipe and you’ll still have great tasting chocolate chip cookies.

6. Replace unhealthy oils with heart healthy ones.

In recipes where you can’t eliminate or substitue for all of the oil, use a heart healthy oil such as olive or canola. Canola oil is the lowest in saturated fat of the oils available at your local supermarket.

7. Replace eggs with egg whites or egg
substitute

Generally, you replace one egg in a recipe with two egg whites to lower the fat content of your recipe.

Give some of these healthy recipe substitutions a try and you can still enjoy your favorite foods without guilt! Imagine how much fun you can have creating your own healthy recipes using these substitutions!
